Our Story: Independent Publisher of Cultural Children’s Books
At Picnic Heist, an independent children’s book publisher, we believe in the power of storytelling. Stories bring people together, spark imagination, and create lasting connections. Moreover, as a publisher of cultural children’s books, we craft picture books that elevate diverse voices and captivate readers of all ages. Picnic Heist is more than a publishing house — it’s a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and heart.
How We Publish Children’s Books Differently
Our journey began with a simple dream: to offer something new in the world of publishing. From the start, we imagined a space where authors and illustrators feel supported, celebrated, and inspired to share stories that reflect the richness of human experience. We’re committed to books that connect across generations — stories that delight children, resonate with families, and stay with readers long after the last page.
Our passion is creating picture books that blend meaningful messages with stunning artistry. Each title is carefully crafted to balance engaging storytelling with illustrations that capture the imagination, creating books that children want to return to again and again. Our cultural children’s books highlight diverse voices and experiences, helping young readers see themselves in stories while also discovering new perspectives. In every project, we aim to leave a lasting impression on readers of all ages. From curious toddlers exploring their first stories to thoughtful adults sharing books with loved ones, our titles invite reflection, spark joy, and nurture a deeper sense of empathy and wonder.
What Picnic Heist Means
My daughter has always loved playing picnic. While other little girls might have tea parties, she hosted picnic parties instead. She would wander through the house collecting anything and everything that brought her joy — toys, books, snacks, treasures — then carefully lay it all out and invite her lovies to join the celebration.
To me, Picnic reflects joy, community, and the magic of gathering what you love to share with others. Heist reflects boldness — a fearless reclaiming of space for imagination, truth, and daring ideas. Together, Picnic Heist represents creativity, joy, and the courage to do things differently.
As a publisher, we take a deeply personal, hands-on approach. Rather than following the traditional model, we champion diverse creators, offer higher royalties, and nurture both debut authors and seasoned illustrators. Our goal is simple but powerful: to publish books that matter — books that inspire, challenge, and shine.
Building Together: Yeehoo, CapyFun, and Picnic Heist
I first fell in love with Yeehoo Press books. Their picture books were imaginative, beautifully produced, and full of heart — the kind of stories that stay with you. I knew I wanted to connect with the publisher behind them.
That’s how I met Helen H. Wu. From our very first conversation, we clicked — and we’ve never stopped talking since. Helen is not only an incredible publisher, but also someone who goes above and beyond to lift others in the industry.
Thanks to our shared values and endless brainstorming sessions, Picnic Heist has grown in exciting ways. We’ve welcomed select Yeehoo titles into our catalog. In addition, we’ve partnered with CapyFun — Helen’s whimsical lifestyle brand built around the gentle charm of capybaras — to explore creative, character-driven projects that blend storytelling with play.
Together, our commitment to quality, imagination, and meaningful stories places Picnic Heist within a growing constellation of imprints. As a result, we are helping to elevate what children’s publishing can be. In addition, these collaborations allow us to bring imaginative, high-quality picture books into the hands of children and families everywhere.
At Picnic Heist, every book is a celebration of creativity — and we invite you to join the feast of stories, imagination, and joy.
